Unit 7 Discussion 1 Posted by: Please share some specific examples from your experience either as a teacher or as a student. I think that the ready-made summative assessments that come from the textbooks or other instructional programs have their uses and their limitations.
Having spent a great deal of time in the last few weeks constructing assessments, I find the tests that are part of the textbooks I use in my science classes to be adequate, but they could be better. For example, the students are given several completion questions that are supposed to test their knowledge of the chapter vocabulary.
However, the questions are constructed so that the blanks are at the beginning of the sentence and students are given two options that can be used to fill in the blank, both of which we were warned away from using in the creation of our own questions by Classroom Assessment.
However, I will say that the critical thinking questions short answer and essay responses are more in line with the structure outlined in Classroom Assessment. These questions require students to do a little more independent thinking.
One of the major drawbacks to using the ready made tests is that sometimes teachers choose alternate learning targets from those in the text book. I know that in my class, I use a wide variety of materials in addition to my text book and that in many cases, I use different learning targets than those in the book.
Because I teach at a Project-based learning school, I often have a different take on the learning targets that the book defines for teachers. My school subscribes to an assessment service called Illuminate that provides a bank of multiple choice questions.
Students can answer using a bubble sheet, similar to the standardized tests. The major benefit is that, because the questions are standards-based and because all of the results are digitzed, the data gathered from the assessment can be analyzed easily and quickly.
I can find out which question was most commonly missed, what the most common incorrect answer was for that question and which students chose that answer.
This allows me to target my instruction to those kids for that idea rather than trying to blanket the entire class with broad statements. The DC P is a fully digital portable conference unit that can be configured either as a chairman, delegate or interpreter unit.
